Lab-Grown Diamonds: The HPHT Method

Lab-grown diamonds have taken the jewelry world by storm, offering a sustainable and ethical alternative to mined diamonds. But did you know there’s more than one way to grow a diamond in a lab? Today, we’re focusing on the HPHT method, one of the two main techniques used to create these stunning gemstones.

What is HPHT?

HPHT stands for High Pressure High Temperature. This method mimics the natural diamond formation process that occurs deep within the Earth’s mantle. Here’s a breakdown of the HPHT process:

  • Seed Placement: A tiny diamond seed, usually a sliver of a natural diamond, is placed in a chamber.
  • Carbon Source: The chamber is filled with a carbon source, such as graphite, and a metallic flux to aid growth.
  • Extreme Conditions: Intense pressure (up to 50,000 atmospheres) and scorching temperatures (around 1,500°C) are applied.
  • Diamond Growth: Under this pressure and heat, the carbon atoms dissolve in the flux and migrate towards the seed crystal. These carbon atoms then arrange themselves in the same diamond crystal structure, slowly enlarging the seed into a full-fledged diamond.

HPHT vs. CVD: Diamonds Made Two Ways

HPHT is one of two primary methods for growing lab-grown diamonds. The other method is Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). While both techniques create real diamonds with the same chemical and physical properties as mined ones, there are some key differences:

  • Growth Environment: HPHT uses a solid carbon source, while CVD utilizes a gaseous one.
  • Typical Size: HPHT is more efficient for growing larger diamonds (less than 1 carat) due to its faster growth rate.
  • Color: HPHT diamonds tend to have a higher average color grade (closer to colorless).
